Chapter Twenty-Three

Mae leans over the center console of the car and nibbles on Stephanie’s ear and jawbone, making her smile.

“Where are you taking me?”

“It’s a surprise.”

Mae glides a hand across Stephanie’s breasts, down her stomach, and cups her between her thighs on the outside of her jeans. Stephanie releases a gasping laugh and pulls Mae’s hand out and holds it firmly on her thigh.

“What are you doing?”

“Trying to encourage you to tell me where we’re going.”

“Is that your own brand of interrogation technique?” Mae frowns and sits back in her seat, looking straight ahead. “Mae, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean… I wasn’t thinking. I’m sorry.”

“It’s ok. There are many ‘figures of speech’ in this century that I need to learn how to not take so literally. It will just take time to get used to how mortals talk in this century.”

“Can you come back?”

Mae smiles and leaps back across the center console to lay her head on Stephanie’s shoulder and places a hand on the inside of her thigh. Stephanie wraps an arm around her shoulders and kisses the top of her head.

They ride in silence till they’re parking outside of a department store at the mall. Mae lifts her head and looks around in confusion.

“This is a giant marketplace.”

“Well, yeah, but we call it a mall.”

Mae unbuckles her seatbelt and exits the vehicle with Stephanie. Entwining their fingers, they walk hand in hand to the entrance, with Mae looking around at the vehicles, the precisely landscaped dividers with trees and bushes, and the massive amount of concrete forming the giant stores.

“Why are we here?”

“You need clothes and shoes.”

“Oh, right, I guess I can’t wear my kimono and your clothes every day. You probably would like your clothes to yourself again.”

“I don’t mind you wearing my clothes. I like when you wear your kimono, but you should have more options. You were stuck wearing your same samurai uniform every day for hundreds of years.”

“I am kind of sad I will never be able to wear that again. If I had not been so concerned with looking nice for you, I would have been wearing that when Kuma transformed me back. Oh well, I guess it is for the best. Time to move on, right?” Stephanie smiles and kisses the top of her hand. “Right.”

Stephanie holds the door open for Mae, and she releases a small gasp of awe with wide eyes as she walks into the store. She quickly takes Stephanie’s hand again and clings to it as the amount of bright lights, abundant racks of clothes, shoes, and handbags, and people bustling about overwhelms her.

This is Mae’s first time in a large store, and her first time in a large crowd as a normal size human in nearly six-hundred-years. Her instincts to run and hide are nagging at her, making her skin crawl and making her stomach sour with nervousness.

“Are you ok?”

“I am just trying to accept that I do not have to escape from here.” Stephanie gently squeezes her hand and tugs her forward.
